Amanda Stevens

photo of Amanda StevensAmanda is a Director of MP Building Assessors Ltd (MPBA). She graduated with a BSc(Hons) from the University of Greenwich. After a spell in The City, using her IT skills, she wanted to combine her passion for a safer environment with the links she had made in the construction industry whilst at University.

Amanda joined MP Building Assessors to develop the Eco side of the business. At that time the core business was Energy Rating Assessors, using National Home Energy Rating Assessor software. Amanda has built up the EcoHomes and Code for Sustainable Homes assessments and MPBA are now the leaders in their field. This has further allowed them to grow from strength to strength and they are now also able to offer Commercial BREEAM assessments. Now is a very exciting time for everyone in the team at MP Building Assessors.

What is your main role in the project?
Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor

What are you looking forward to?
Gaining different perspectives. Before we even became involved in the development I was receiving queries from my clients on the project, it has opened an interesting forum! I am looking forward to seeing clear and practical ways to achieve Code Level 6 in the traditional build method.

What are you most nervous about throughout the project?
I feel very passionately about sustainability and ways to protect our planet, as such am excited to work on this project. I look forward to the final results with high expectations, which I am sure will be fulfilled.

Why do you think this project is valuable?
To demonstrate that we can provide real solutions to make the world a better place! Even if we all just took one of the design elements and applied it to our new and existing housing stock.

What do you think you’ll learn by being involved?
Can we take a rain check – when the study is complete.

Personal Info

Town where you live
Lovely Leigh-on-Sea in Essex (yes I am an Essex girl).

Who you live with?
My wonderful husband

Any children? Pets?
Our pets are our children, we have rescued two adorable black cats who are getting to a grand old age of 14years – so we must be doing something right!

Hobbies/interests
Member of various animal charities and I love reading on the latest developments we have made in securing a safe environment for them. All you tend to hear is bad news so I do enjoy the success stories.

I have recently discovered ‘Go-Ape’ – a high wire forest adventure course of rope bridges, tarzan swings and zip slides... all set high up in the trees. A great ‘alternative’ day out with friends!

What you like to do at the weekend?
My week is run normally at 100mph so I will normally have a lazy Saturday, we spend the day together at one of the many cafes in Leigh followed by a really good film. We spend most Sundays at the gym & thrashing it out on the badminton courts, or if the outdoors beckons, we will pick a spot on the map and go for a hike!

Any other info that you think sums you up (eg, which football team you support) or a claim to fame or a little known fact about you?
Durox (part of the Tarmac group) sponsored me through University.

My husband comes from a big family and I have 17 in-laws and that doesn’t include my nieces and nephews!

My most amazing talent is….. I can play the didgeridoo!

Tarmac poll

How many different types of concrete do Tarmac offer?

Did you know?

Fact 9

Concrete can be dense or lightweight and this choice affects its thermal behaviour. In either case, concrete can act as a thermal sink or as an insulator. In some buildings you can see masonry concrete doing both.
