Tarmac Home project team: Hollowcore with an exposed soffit will considerably enhance thermal mass of the house which will moderate the temperature changes in a 24 hour cycle thereby demanding less energy to maintain a stable temperature. The thermal mass benefits of masonry constructed buildings are supported by research which predicts that some lightweight homes with minimal thermal mass could be experience acute over heating problems in as little as 20 years as a result of global climate changes. The full benefits of thermal mass are not factored into current legislation but there are plans to do so and at that point masonry construction will be favoured as the most sustainable building solution.
